“Why do you keep so much distance from people around you?” I asked the 22-year-old engineer who had come to meet me recently for an elaborate session of handwriting analysis.

Sitting across the table, the girl, whom I will call Sheryl, did not say a word. She just shrugged and gave a nervous smile.

We had discussed her personality in brief and now we were touching upon a very sensitive part of her life. I looked at her handwriting sample more closely and continued: “You hardly allow people to get close to you. As a result, there may be just a person or two in your life who have access to you, who you are, and what you really feel.”

She smiled again, but it was clear she did not want to say anything. I knew I had to make her talk. So, I also took a pause. After the silence became a little uncomfortable, Sheryl said: “Shall I tell you something?” There was a pause again. “I feel very lonely. Hard as I may try, but I find it difficult to let intimacy grow between me and someone I like. Because of that, I am sailing through life all by myself.”

Now, let’s look at her handwriting to know how I found out that she kept people at bay and had therefore become lonely in life. Notice the space between the words. It’s extremely wide and irregular. Ideally, the spacing should be twice the size of the middle zone letters, such as a, o, m, n and s. In Sheryl’s case, it was much more than that, which indicates the distance she keeps between herself and others. However, most of her letters are connected, which reflects her need for people in her life. In short, she is torn between what she does and what she needs. (See her handwriting below)

I drew a few lines on the sample and said: “There was something that happened to you when you were about 15-16 years of age. I see a clear indication that the seed of distrust inside you was sown around that time. Your handwriting says that the issues you faced around that time of your life are responsible for your lack of faith, which has turned you into a person who feels it’s safe to be with yourself, and keeps others at bay. However, the handwriting also says that your internal need is to stay close to people. You need them, Sheryl. This paradox is pulling you in two different directions. And that is your main problem. Tell me what happened to you back then.”

“Hmmm… That’s a long story. Would you want to listen?”

“Willingly,” I said even as I leaned back.

She went on: “As I look back now, the entire episode appears silly and insignificant. But it was not so at that time. I was just 16 years old. As a teenager, it did affect me. I had just taken admission to a college and had made some new friends. I grew a liking for a guy in the college. It was like a crush and I told one of my new friends. Soon, the guy also came to know that I liked him. I don’t know how he got to know, but he did.

“Surprisingly, after becoming aware of my feelings for him, he started behaving in an odd manner. He would often stare at us, and pass comments. Although it was very irritating, we decided not to react. It went on for a few months. First year passed and then second came. I continued to like him and my friends knew about it. They continued to tease me. The matter never left my heart and I locked my feelings deep inside me. But the guy’s behaviour made no sense to me.

“Later, it turned out that he actually liked my friend. I could never come to terms with the fact that he could grow feelings for my friend despite knowing that I was fond of him. After a few weeks, my friend also admitted that she was interested in him. I was shocked and shattered. I felt betrayed. She was my friend and was romantically involved with the guy I liked. I don’t know whether my reaction was right or wrong, but that incident sent me inside a strong shell….” (Sheryl told me many other things but I won’t mention them here.)

Her narrative had clearly established what the strokes in her handwriting were revealing. The analysis session went on for about two hours, during which a number of things about her were discussed. But we revolved mostly around this aspect of her life, which was slowly nibbling at her happiness. Her writing showed that at a subconscious level, she had begun behaving in a way, which ensured that people did not get close to her.

You can see that while analysing her handwriting I drew many other lines to arrive at a conclusion about her personality. But those facts were only for her ears. I am not revealing them here.

In order to her deal with her problem, I gave her a few handwriting exercises including a change in her signature. I recommended a change in her signature because its size was small. A small signature, I have said before, indicates that the writer is introvert in public. The signature was compounding her problem because it did not let her go beyond her mistrust, and hardly allowed her to approach others with confidence.

After the analysis was over, she left for Pune. A couple of hours later, a text message from her landed in my inbox: “You know what… I broke down in the bus… I promise to do my exercises properly and get out of this mess….”

Before I start analyzing Twilight star Robert  Pattinson’s handwriting at the request of a wild fan of the actor, I want all those who love the vegetarian vampire to take a deep breath. But don’t close your eyes. Now, control your heartbeats as I give below some of his lines from the movie, which make girls scream and swoon over the husky, skinny star that talks less, whispers more. Here we go:

Edward Cullen: And so the lion fell in love with the lamb.

Isabella Swan: What a stupid lamb.

Edward Cullen: What a sick, masochistic lion.

Edward Cullen: I’m the world’s most dangerous predator, Bella. Every thing about me invites you in. My voice, my face, even my smell. As if I would need any of that… as if you could outrun me… as if you could fight me off. I’m designed to kill.

Isabella Swan: Are you going to tell me how you stopped the van?

Edward Cullen: Yeah. Um… I had an adrenaline rush. It’s very common. You can Google it.

Edward Cullen: You’re like my own personal brand of heroin.

I think the mood is perfect now. I believe I have sufficiently fired your hunger for Edward, and escalated your appetite to know more about him as Robert. Are you ready? Here it is!

1) Edward is energetic and aggressive: Edward and Robert are pretty much the same. But, Robert is very stubborn. Notice the letter ‘t’ in ‘Pat’ of his signature. The stems of the letter look like a tepee or a phallic symbol. The more the gap between the two stems at the baseline, the more stubborn the person is. Robert will rarely admit his mistakes and once he makes up his mind, it is very difficult to change him.

2) Edward is sarcastic and humorous: So is Robert — very sarcastic. Notice the sharp edge of the t-bar in Pat. It shows that he is a very sharp-tongued person who is capable of slicing people with his words. People who have the privilege to converse with him will tell you that. Also, Robert sometimes says things impulsively which he later regrets.

3) Edward can’t wait to be with Bella. He is too impatient: Robert is an equally impatient man in reality. He hates to wait. In this signature, you can see that he has not bothered to write his complete name. I have about 20 samples of his signature and in all of them he has left it incomplete. Conclusion: People who don’t bother to finish their signatures and end them with a thread are usually in a hurry, and they don’t have time for many things.

4) Edward talks less and is reticent: But Robert is not like that. Notice that the letter ‘a’ in Pat is open at the top. It indicates that he is a very talkative person and he likes to speak his mind. But sometimes, he ends up saying more than he should, because of which he lands in tough situations. Robert is often inclined to offer advices without being asked for. People around him sometimes feel overburdened by his garrulity.

In this letter he wrote to a fan, you can see the most of his a & o are open at the top.

5) Edward knows what he wants: Robert doesn’t. There is a lot of confusion in Robert’s life as far as the choices he makes are concerned. Often, he bites more than he can chew. Robert usually finds himself swamped by work because he hardly plans. The lower-zone letters often touch the lines below.

6) Edward is a quiet man who does not like to socialize: Robert is also like him. Although he looks very confident in public, his internal need, as shown by the small middle zone in his handwriting (see his letter), is to avoid crowds and spend time concentrating on things that he likes to do. His handwriting reveals that he likes to get involved in intellectual pursuits and cultivate reading habit. But because of his lifestyle, he finds less time for himself.

Kristen Stewart

In real life, Robert Pattinson is dating his Twilight heroine, Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan). Let’s look at her handwriting and get to know her better and also find out how compatible they are:

1) Bella Swan is clumsy, vulnerable and feeble: But Kristen is not. She is a strong woman who likes to speak her mind. Notice the large size of her signature in small note she wrote to a fan. It shows that she has an above-average public self-image and therefore it is very tough to push her around.

2) Bella is soft-spoken and sweet: Kristen is like that, but she is also as sarcastic as Robert Pattinson (see the sharp ending of her t-bar). Probably she won’t put up with his caustic remarks. She will fight back in the same way because she is equally sarcastic, which is reflected by the sharp ending of the t-bar in her signature. The actors’ signatures show they have all the ingredients necessary to ensure that the arguments between them are spicy and worthy of eavesdropping.

3) Bella is a good talker: So is Kristen. Notice the figure 8 in her signature. The smooth flow of the stroke is indicative of the actress’s capacity to weave words in a magical way. I don’t know much about her private life, but don’t be surprised if you get to know that she likes to write. Because such figure 8 is usually found in the handwriting of writers and authors.

4) Bella does not like to be told what to do: Kristen doesn’t like that either. In the small note she has written to her fan, notice that she has inserted capital letters in the middle: “For” & “Best”. Clearly, she is breaking the rules of grammar. In behavior, this violation of rule will be reflected in her tendency to ward off everything that comes as a suggestion.

5) Bella is confident and fearless: Kristen is strong. But she does not feel confident. See the low placement of the t-bar in her signature. She usually indulges in extreme self-criticism and does not forgive herself quickly.  She hardly allows herself any room for her own mistakes.

David Coleman Headley, formerly known as Daood Sayed Gilani, (born June 30, 1960) is a Chicago-based Pakistani American, who conspired to launch the 2008 Mumbai attacks and other terrorist activity. He changed his Muslim name to a Judaeo-Christian name to hide his Muslim identity to make travel to India easier. Since his arrest in October 2009, Headley has yielded much information about the Mumbai attacks, as well as intelligence about ongoing terrorist activities.

According to a CNN report, in December 2009, he wrote a letter to his uncle, Billy, from jail. Let me analyze his handwriting and tell you what his personality is like. But before that, a little information on how he was arrested. Headley was arrested by the US federal authorities in Chicago for plotting against the employees of a newspaper in Copenhagen. Headley is accused of travelling to Denmark to scout the building of the Jyllands-Posten newspaper, and a nearby Synagogue, for an attack by terrorists.

SAMPLE I

He thinks very highly of himself: Notice the extreme height of upper zone of his handwriting. By upper zone I mean the stem of lower case t, d, h and l. In the upper zone of a handwriting sample, graphologists see the mental health of the writer. The extreme height in Headley’s handwriting suggests he thinks very highly of himself. He is often inclined to think that many around him are intellectually starved and that their lives might be better if they accepted (his kind of) spirituality. He believes that he is following a path that enables him to makes decisions that are in the “larger interest of the humanity”.

Hyper-religious fathering: But what if one has been brought up on the doctrine that the larger interest of humanity lies in killing humans? In that case, there arises an urgent need to question the belief in a civilised society. But Headley, with a high upper zone, cannot challenge the accuracy of that dogma because he thinks that whatever he does is right. That extreme upper zone also reflects he has had extremely strict and hyper-religious fathering. In addition, the tall upper zone speaks of scholarly and philosophical pursuits, and the idealist who expects perfectionist standards of himself.

SAMPLE II

Intellectual narcissism: In the sample above, see the highlighted area where he says that he is a “100% Muslim” despite being half American. This statement by Headley confirms that he indeed had a hyper-religious upbringing. Someone with an upper zone as high as we see in Headley’s handwriting can go to any extent to prove to the world her/his viewpoints. That is why Headley, who has been indoctrinated that a “real” Muslim should indulge in activities that are aimed at eliminating all diversities, is proving the same to the world with his nefarious activities.

In this section of his handwriting, a few things that stand out are:

1) High writing pressure and straight baseline

2) Angular and pointed strokes (see lower case m’s and n’s)

3) Well-formed lower case ‘f’

4) Flying i-dots

Now, let me explain one by one:

1) People with high pressure and straight baseline in their handwriting have a resolute and unshakable faith. They get totally involved into doing whatever they want to. In a good and organised handwriting, it becomes a positive trait. The high pressure usually reinforces the writer’s characteristics — good or bad. Therefore, if a person, who thinks that killing is cool, writes with a high pressure, it means that he will put his entire energy into it.

2) Angular strokes in a handwriting indicates that the writer thinks very very fast. He executes things quickly and then he gets on the another job. Now, I am combining the angularity with the well-formed lower case ‘f’

(3) A well-formed lower case ‘f’ — with full upper and lower loops — reflects a writer’s ability to plan meticulously and execute immaculately. No wonder Headley planned so many terrorist activities and made fool-proof strategies to carry them out.

4) Among other things, flying i-dots show that the writer’s ideas and philosophies may not any basis at all and they may be have no touch with reality.

The conclusion: Although this handwriting sample does not have apparent strokes that suggest Headley could be a killer, it does show he has all the traits of a master strategist who will go to any length to prove to the world what he thinks is right.

In the past few years, very few Indian politicians have been trashed or won accolades like Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. Clearly, he is one of the most controversial persons in India. A lot has been written against Modi and his handling of the post-Godhra scenario. He has been called the modern-day Hitler. On the other hand, it is also said that there is no better performer than Narendra Modi in India’s political structure. In fact Gujarat’s achievements in the past few years are often attributed to the efforts made by him.

But we are not here to decide whether we should side with someone who abuses him or someone who showers praises on him. We won’t conclude whether things that are said about him are true or not. Here, we will just analyse Modi’s signature. I would like to add here that I have not seen a signature like Modi’s. Anyway, here are a few points I have made about his signature.

Illegible signature: If we did not have his full name written under his signature, is there any way we could have figured out that it is Narendra Modi’s handwriting sample? Nope. Such signatures are illegible. Legible means the writer is interested in communicating, illegible means they are not. In general, an illegible signature reveals a desire to be seen but not known, keeping things private. Illegible handwriting in combination with other specific traits may indicate dishonesty, but there are a lot of variables.

Lack of readability: If all letters in a signature are readable, then the writer’s feelings are readable. Such person will not be able to hide his feelings. Even if such a person tries to hide dissemble his feelings, they will be revealed by the expressions on his face. His activities — good, bad or ugly — cannot remain unknown for a long time. Modi’s signature is not readable. So, it’s likely he does not have all these traits.

Letters missing: According to graphology, if some of the letters are missing in a signature, it indicates that the person always tries to avoid any dialogue on a few matter of his life.

Secretive circle: The second thing that stands out in his signature is the big circle around the first letter of his name. This indicates that the writer wants to keep his true identity hidden. They guard their secrets and it is very difficult to know the truth about such people. Many questions about such writers’ lives are just a subject of speculations.

Camouflaged first name: This reflects Modi’s tendency to be over-protective about himself. Circles around the first name shows the person gets very defensive in public. Such writers have a problem making friends because they do not open up and are always scared of getting hurt. They suspect the motives of people around them, which results in their social isolation.

Two dots at the right end: The dots indicate that Modi likes to have the final word in whatever he does. The two dots also suggest that he does not like others’ intervention and keeps all suggestions at bay.

Now, there is one question in the mind of many of you. Does Modi’s handwriting sample corroborate his possible “involvement” in the Gujarat massacre? Hmmm… Do you really want me to answer that? Rahul Gandhi will probably be the next Prime Minister of India in 2014. Before his “imminent coronation”, a picture of him is being painted for all of us, which unequivocally establishes that Rahul will be a good ruler. Maybe. There is no doubt that Rahul is a man of average intelligence, suave and has a charm about him. But will he be a good ruler? One can’t say. Here, I have his handwriting sample that will help us discover a few things about his personality. This will indicate how he will be as a Prime Minister. Also, we will try to figure out whether he has any commitment issues because of which he has not yet settled down. Come on, our mission here is: Unravel Rahul.

Rahul loves to reach out: Rahul Gandhi became a visible face in the Indian politics some seven years ago. Since then, we have known him as a person who likes to mingle with people, unlike other politicians. Most of his public appearances have presented him as a person who likes to be around people and has the ability to connect with them. Now, let’s figure out from his handwriting whether he really likes people or it’s just a sham. Bingo! The slant of his handwriting suggests that Rahul indeed likes to take that extra step to reach out to people and mix up with them. He responds sympathetically to his universe. He is a sociable person. However, in personal life, he does not let others come close to him. As a Prime Minister, we may see him completely different from his predecessors. Despite being in power, he will be more accessible than people who have occupied the chair in the past.

He is fast & quick: The simplicity of the form in his handwriting shows Rahul likes to take shortcuts and get the message across quicker. He gets to the point quickly and would not like it if he is overburden with too many details. He just wants facts. A simplified writer like Rahul prefers telling “like it is”. The emphasis of his approach is on the intellect more than the emotions. However, if he leads the country, he may take some impulsive decisions.

Is he mama’s boy? Ummm… Yes. He looks up to mother Sonia Gandhi for most of his decisions. This trait in him is reflected by the leftward lower zone in handwriting. He takes no decisions — personal or political — without consulting his mother. Will he ever come out of her shadow? Unlikely. With a mum as  powerful as her, it appears difficult.

Does he show his real persona? Perhaps no. In public life, Rahul Gandhi has a tendency to hide his real persona.  See his illegible signature. It shows that at times, he will project himself as a completely different person just to appear right and up-to-date. This means he can hide his motives, and it will be difficult for not-so-close people to figure out what’s going on in his  mind. Sometimes, Rahul, who lacks enthusiasm (notice short t-bars), just promises things impulsively, and can’t keep commitments. So, this is where he will act like a typical politician! One more thing: Rahul’s illegible signature shows he is not interested in communication. That also means he won’t like if you come up with new ideas. An illegible signature can bring him troubles and controversies the way it did for his father, Rajiv Gandhi, who also had illegible signature. Writers with illegible signatures have a tendency to indulge in underhand dealings (read Bofors scam). So, Rahul ought to watch out and he should try making his signature legible.

Does he like Gandhi surname? No, he does not. Notice a truncated Gandhi in his signature. This means that Rahul does not like to be associated with anything which Gandhis have been doing over the years. He feels a strong need to detach himself from the name and disown the legacy that has earned criticisms from various quarters. So, one thing is certain. Rahul won’t behave like any of the Gandhis so far.

Is he commitment phobic? Yes, Rahul baba is scared of commitment, which is probably one of the reasons why he has not married yet. Notice the wide spacing between words and the lack of connection between letters. Such a writer faces difficulty in establishing close relationships. Frequent breaks between letters suggest breaking of connection between himself and others. At times, Rahul thinks it is easier to manage his affairs alone rather than bother getting involved with others. But because Rahul loves to reach out, it’s possible he was the one who approached the object of his affection, but as things went on he started showing fear of commitment. This is what he told a newspaper just before becoming an MP for the first time:

“My girlfriend’s name is Veronique not Juanita,” laughs Rahul, “She is Spanish and not Venezuelan or Colombian. She is an architect not a waitress, though I wouldn’t have had a problem with that. She is also my best friend.” He met her in his university in England. Has he already proposed to her? “Hmm”, he answers with a huge smile, “I am not sure when I will be settling down.”
